As the whole world sat indoors for months we had no choice but to turn to Television for entertainment. No wonder 2020 was a good year for OTT platforms! Here is our trusty guide to the best series of the year so you can check if you have missed out on something that is truly binge-worthy!

The Crown season 4  

The Crown revolves around the journey and life of Queen Elizabeth 2 from when she takes over the throne post her father’s death. Though the series was already three seasons old the 4th season that premiered this year was a huge hit surpassing its predecessors. The series went viral and trended this year after the addition of a chapter on iconic Princess Diana. 

The historical drama written by Peter Morgan takes us into the life and happenings of the royal family while also tracing Britain’s changing political environment.  

Better Call Saul Season 5

A masterclass at storytelling Better Call Saul is a prequel to the hit series Breaking Bad. The series traces the fascinating journey of Jimmy/Saul with a mix of new and a few familiar characters. Though everyone who watched Breaking Bad knows what happens to jimmy and how the series is going to end the season 5 that premiered this year featured the big leap in Jimmy’s path where he becomes Saul, leaving viewers on the edge awaiting the final season anxiously.

Queen’s Gambit 

How can one binge watch a game of chess? Set during the Cold War era, orphaned chess prodigy Beth Harmon struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world. The Queen’s Gambit manages to glam up the infamously dull game of Chess. The series is more than just the game and the championships. It deals with mental health, relationships, power, lust, addiction, adulthood, societal norms and so much more. While a series revolving around prodigies and excellence is not unique the eccentric character played by Anya Taylor-Joy, the period it is set in, and the game of life makes the Queen’s Gambit a thrilling watch. 

Schitt’s Creek Season 6

The year’s most heart-warming, fun and wittily hilarious series that set a record by bagging seven primetime awards and nine Emmys in all Schitt’s Creek is a must-watch Canadian Series. The plot of the series revolves around a millionaire family that loses all their wealth and property but a town they bought as a joke where they move to live. The final season brought a satisfying; the unexpected end will leave one feeling heavy hearted and hopeful at the same time. 

Emily In Paris 

A young American woman moves to a marketing firm in Paris to provide them with an American perspective on things. The year’s kinkiest show that garnered hate from the fashion industry and fascination from the rest, Emily in Paris is a compelling watch. Whether you want to crib your way through it complaining about the unrealistic plot, tacky wardrobe choices, overhyped dialogues, and the very exasperating characters or watch it as an escape from reality is your choice!

Dark Season 3 

The German Netflix twisty time-travel drama returns for a third and final season. This season centers on the mysteries and entwined histories of four local families bridging multiple generations. The show gained popularity for its heavy, brain-bending, twisty plot. The final season which was again full of bootstrap paradox left many just as confused as ever. Watching, re-watching and finally googling decoding theories that explained the inconclusive end.  

Sex education season 2

High school student Otis grows up in quite a unique home and environment where sex is a tediously open conversation on a daily day and he is surrounded by manuals, videos, and posters of lovemaking. Living with his mom jean who is a sex therapist makes Otis quite an expert in the sex-ed course though he does not have any personal experience. The socially awkward boy goes on to share his knowledge with those who require it. In season two of sophomore year, there is much more going on. Each topic in the season is treated with so much care that beyond humor it is quite informative and is a must-watch for young adults. 

The umbrella academy

On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.
