This Meteor Crater should be your next Travel Destination!

It’s right here in India!

The eco-system of the Lonar Crater is home to a wide variety of birds, butterflies, reptiles, and animals

The lake and the surrounding forests are also known to attract a wide variety of migratory and resident birds like magpies, swallows, tailorbirds, larks, hoopoes, baya weavers, herons, blue jays, teals, red-wattled lapwings, black-winged stilts, grebes and brahminy ducks.

Also home to gazelles, langurs, wild boar, chinkara and leopards, it is indeed a world unto itself. This unique eco-system cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Fascinating to say the least!

The presence of certain rock minerals in the crater draws close comparisons to the geology and crater formations on the Moon.  In that sense, Lonar has been able to give us insights into the lunar!

Use the services of a guide when visiting Lonar Crater

While you could explore it on your own, to truly experience the crater, do use the services of a guide. One guide that I would recommend is Mr. Ramesh Rathod (9158925048), who has lived there since his childhood and has a great understanding of the crater and its flora and fauna.

Getting to Lonar Crater

Lonar Crater can be reached by road either from Mumbai or Pune. It can also be done as a day trip from Aurangabad but having done just that, I can tell you it was exhausting. I would recommend that you get to Lonar by the evening, spend a night there and explore the crater early the next day, as by noon the sun is quite sharp.

The Daitya Sudan Temple

While you are there you must try and visit the impressive Daitya Sudan Temple in a small village in Lonar. This stunning, unusually shaped temple has been dated to the reign of the Chalukya Dynasty who ruled Central & South India between the 6th and 12th century AD. The temple is covered with detailed carvings of stories from epics like the Mahabharata and incarnations of various gods and goddesses. Take the time to visit this temple; you will not regret it.

Lonar Crater is a mystical remnant of a celestial episode…who knows what other secrets remain to be discovered in this magical place.
