According to sources from the police and a leading news portal, 3 school girls aged 8, 10 and 12 were reportedly sexually assaulted by a stranger over 2 years. This incident took place near the school where the victims studied. It’s a primary and middle school run by the Greater Chennai Corporation. The girls were repeatedly assaulted by the unknown man and the incident is said to have taken place around the premises of the school.
The girls are said to have been escorted by a fellow student, aged 9. The incident came to light after a fourth girl was also being taken by the boy to the strange man. The girl escaped and told her parents about the incident which initiated the chain of events resulting in the news coming out to notice.
The harasser allegedly threatened to kill the girls if they reported the incident to the police. Due to this fear, the parents also hesitated to come out with it. When one of the parents decided to complain to the police on January 23, the police seemed to have not filed an FIR. The school also reached out to the police to file an official complaint, which also went in vain as still no FIR has been registered.
The news comes as a shock to the city. Cases of Sexual assault against minors have come to light a lot in the recent past and are alarming. According to Section 19 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, if a person has any information on abuse and fails to report it to the authorities, then they may face imprisonment for up to 6 months or pay a fine.
