According to CCTV footage taken from inside the house, Sonu Gupta was having an argument with her in-laws, in the course of which she got hysterical, picked up her sleeping son, Ashu, and pushed him down the stairs. Her mother-in-law is seen trying to stop her, as the child wails in fright, but in the end, he suffered injuries in his head and face, for which he was later treated at AIIMS.
The incident took place on 11 January but was reported to the police only on 24 January by Sonu’s husband Nitin, who runs a cosmetics business. Her mother-in-law told the police that in the five years since she had married into the family, Sonu has shown signs of extreme temper, fought with them over the property and assaulted her son. In the latest episode, she threatened to frame them by killing their grandson. “I got the CCTV installed so I could get proof of her atrocities,” she told NDTV. But, her husband claimed that she later accepted her mistake and committed the crime out of anger.
Police suspect that Sonu might be suffering from mental illness and might soon start her counselling sessions.
