We dearly miss Asin onscreen!

By Humsika J

Asin, the ‘Queen of Kollywood’ as her fans proudly call her, was known for her phenomenal acting skills and gained fans across the country in the short period she spent on screen. Let’s find out more about her iconic journey in the industry, keep scrolling:

The actor made her debut in the Malayalam movie Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka in 2001, at the age of 15. She took a break after this to pursue her education.

Asin came back to the industry with her breakthrough performance in  Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi opposite Ravi Teja, in which she took up the character of a Tamil girl. With this, she got her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress in the year 2003.

Her Tamil debut was M. Kumaran S/O Mahalaxmi, the remake of Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi, in which she played the role of a Malayali girl. The movie was a superhit and thus, began her success stride in Kollywood.

2005 was filled with blockbusters in Tamil. Her movies with three mega stars in the industry became massive hits: Ghajini with Suriya, Majaa with Vikram and Sivakasi with Vijay.

She played the female lead alongside both Thala and Thalapathi in multiple movies. She aced her roles with ease and won people’s hearts in movies like Varalaru and Pokkiri even when the storylines were bigger than the lovetrack.

The way she rocked a chudithar in M. Kumaran S/O Mahalaxmi or a madisaar in Sivakasi gave her audience all the ‘girl-next-door’ vibes. All her costumes were comfortable and yet classy. She was a woman who made strong and wise choices even when the industry was still evolving.

A milestone in her career must be Dasavatharam, in which she played the role of an Iyengar girl whose sole aim was to protect her Lord. Her witty dialogues, comic timing and flustered actions added a lot of dimension to the character.

With all the success, Asin was ready to rock Bollywood with her talent. Her first movie was the remake of Ghajini alongside Aamir Khan. The movie went on to become a massive hit and the actor received her a Filmfare Award for Best Debut in Hindi.

She played the love interest in many movies like Ready, Khiladi 786, Bol Bachchan, Housefull 2 and All is Well with big names in the industry like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Abishek Bachchan. Asin’s performance in all these movies were praised by many critics. They said, “Asin does well, though her screen time is limited. Nonetheless, her amiable looks and stimulating smile add to her charisma!!”.

The one thing that set her apart from all the heroines of her time was the fact that she dubbed for all her movies in all the languages. The actor is a polyglot, which means she is fluent in multiple languages. She can speak seven languages; being well-versed in Malayalam (her mother tongue), Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, English, Hindi and French. A little bit of Italian, a little Marathi which she learned for her movie Khiladi 786, German in progress and a beginner in Spanish. Her love for languages keeps growing with every new trip or experience.

The actor won the most prestigious Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu Government in 2009 and the Annual Award from the Kerala Government in 2012. In her short span in the industry, she received awards from Filmfare, SIIMA, IIFA, Vijay Awards and International Tamil Film Awards. She was part of the Times of India Most Desirable Women for three consecutive years as well.

She has appeared in various commercials, the most memorable one being her Mirinda advertisements. She worked with Lux, Spinz talc, Parachute, Tanishq and many other brands.

Asin married Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma in 2016. She calls Akshay Kumar their cupid and the friendship stands strong till date. The couple has a little princess named Arin Rayn. She says her daughter’s name is a combination of Rahul and her first names. ‘Rayn’ is pronounced ‘Ra’- ‘in’ but spelt with a twist. She calls it a short, simple name, gender neutral, secular, free of religion, caste and patriarchy. Every year, Asin throws a larger than life birthday party for her little girl and shares it with her Instagram followers.

Asin has been amazing on screen and has spread her sparkle in all the industries she was part of. Many fans would love to see her comeback in the industry but it looks like she has taken a strong decision about her life. We have movies to watch and rewatch to reminisce about the ‘Asin Era’ for sure. The early 2000s were truly her period. We wish the actor more and more happiness in the life she has chosen.
