“It’s not fair to single out cinema as male-dominated one as it’s a reflection of society”: Shruti Haasan

What did she say?

Shruti Haasan has always been vocal about her thoughts and opinions, and she is one actor who never minces words. There has been a never-ending debate about how films made here are often male-dominated. It is undoubtedly male-dominated, and has more male representation than female representation. In addition, there is also never ending mansplaining in films, and also concepts are fully portrayed from a male perspective. Women based films are so rare that they’re given a tag called ‘Women-Centric’ film.

Shruti Haasan was part of a recent discussion in which she was asked about the industry being overly male dominated. She specifically said that cinema alone can’t bare the brunt of male dominance, and that it is a mere reflection of the society. She said, “I think we live in a male dominated society. I don’t think it’s fair to single out cinema as cinema is a reflection of telling a stories of what we see. Sometimes, it becomes a chicken-and-egg situation, but mostly I would say a art imitates life.”
