We need more of these talented actresses!

When actresses do a fantastic job on screen, there is an urge to see them do more. So is the case with a few women in Tamil cinema. Aditi Balan

After a sensational debut as heroine in Aruvi that hit the screens in December 2017, Aditi Balan has gone quiet. Sources close to her say that she got similar kind of roles and hence paused to choose the right script. Seen initially as Trisha’s friend in a song in Yennai Arindhal, Aditi Balan managed to get the opportunity to play a challenging character in Aruvi. Her astounding performance led everyone to admire and adore her.

Andrea Jeremiah

A multi-tasker. Singer, actress, and model Andrea has carved a niche for herself doing versatile roles. A happening name in south cinema, a lot was expected from her this year. And she did not disappoint. The Taramani actress played a bravado Indian secret agent in Vishwaroopam 2 alongside Kamal. And before the excitement could subside, came Vada Chennai. This Vettrimaran directorial featured her as a woman who lives in the slum. Again a brave role and was acclaimed by critics for her performance in it. And with good roles coming her way, 2019 may well be her year.

Tammaanah

She combines glamour and talent well. After Baahubali, she has emerged as a matured actress. She has refused cliched heroine roles and has disproved her critics who stated that she can’t act. Tammaanah has plenty lined up for 2019. The actress has completed shot for Seenu Ramasamy directorial Kanne Kalaimaane with Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead. She is part of Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy starring Chiranjeevi. She is also done with Devi 2. Sources say she will pair opposite Vishal for a Sundar C film next year.

Anushka Shetty

One of the very few woman artistes to rule the box office, Anushka is a name to reckon with in south cinema. Especially after Arundthathee, Baahubali and Bagaamathie, she has been in great demand. A lot was expected from her in 2018 but the actress chose to skip routine heroine roles. She is said to have signed a ‘different film’ alongside Madhavan that would go on floors soon.

Aditi Rao Hydari

Kaatru Veliyidai girl had a sensational debut in Tamil cinema. She was introduced by Mani Ratnam. She impressed everyone with her performance he in Chekka Chivantha Vanaam. And no doubt her fans want her to do more in 2019. Currently, Aditi is playing Udhayanidhi’s heroine in Psycho that is directed by Mysskin.

Nithya Menen

From a child artiste to a successful heroine, Nithya Menon has carved a niche for herself. It was OK Kanmani in Tamil, directed by Mani Ratnam, that fetched her appreciation. However as Vijay’s wife in Mersal we saw her reach more masses. Now the actress is busy with a biopic on former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Hopefully, it would be a feather in her crown.

Nazriya Nazim

One of the adorable actresses in south cinema Nazriya made all heads turn with a stellar show in Raja Rani opposite Arya. It was followed by movies with Ajith and Jai among others. However, her marriage with Fahad Fazil meant a break from acting. This year she was back with a bang with a Malayalam movie Koode. She acted as Prithviraj’s sister. Rumors are that she is part of Ajith’s Pink remake in Tamil.

Parvathy is a promising talent, A popular face in south cinema, she has the knack of choosing right scripts. She excelled in Maryan, Bangalore Days, Uttama Villain, Ennu Ninte Moideen, Charlie and Take Off. She was part of Sivaranjaniyum Sila Pengalum directed by Vasanth. Though it is still to hit the screens, the movie won accolades in film festivals. She’s also one of the few actresses in the industry to speak her mind and go against a system that reeks of sexism. Calling out harassment and sexist dialogues, even if it has the name of bigwigs, Parvathy received a whole lot of brickbats from ardent fans of male superstars. But she’s one headstrong woman who will not cower in fear, paving way for several other women opening up about the treatment towards women in the industry and on screen.
