Ocean’s 8: A Fun But Underwhelming Heist Comedy With A Terrific All-Women Cast

Our review!

The Oceans films were always looked at as something for the boy’s club. Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, and others, the heist comedy has primarily featured these actors and how charming they are as professional thieves. The films made us laugh, too. Ocean’s 8 is the same film but with an all-women cast – a rather much-needed move given how a female-lead film is always dubbed a chick-flick and doesn’t go beyond that identity. Ocean’ 8 features strong, calculative women who have thought of every little detail in their robbery plan and how they, together, break stereotypes in their own twisted little ways.

The film begins with Sandra Bullock’s Debbie finally released from prison after five years. She’s had her time to think of an elaborate plan to go back to being a criminal and teaching a lesson to the man who sent her to prison. She teams up with Lou (played by Cate Blanchett), Amita (played by Mindy Kaling), Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Constance (played by Awkwafina), Nine Ball (played by Rihanna), and Rose Weil (played by Helena Bonham Carter).

The plan is simple – steal Cartier’s $150 million diamond necklace. They rope in disgraced designer Rose Weil to convince starlet Daphne Kluger (played by Anne Hathaway) to wear the necklace loaned to them at the coveted Met Gala and steal it that same night. The whole film focuses on how they pull it off and how they get away with it.

It’s not the best-written Oceans film out there, with a lot of loopholes and convenient plot devices that make the heist less believable. The comedic elements are a few with Helena Bonham Carter and Rihanna walking away with the best expressions and lines. The real talent lies in how the cast continue to make the film watchable despite a half-baked story. At the end of the film, there are several questions that go unanswered. The script fails its terrific cast and the whole execution could have been less hyperbolic.

However, the film makes for a good ‘spot the celeb’ game, with so many stars making cameos. So if you are getting bored, you can always spend your time trying to count all the top celebrities who make an appearance in the film.
