Unlike earlier times, cardiologists are now seeing younger people — even those in their 20s and 30s — develop heart issues.

The good news is that many heart problems can be prevented with the right choices. Following a consistent and healthy lifestyle is key to ensuring that your heart works at its optimum. However, genetics also play a role in determining the condition of your heart. If there’s a strong family history, preventive care and early screening become even more vital.

Doctors suggest 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week — this could be brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or even dance. There have been many instances where people have suffered a heart attack following a marathon. It’s imperative to get a health check-up before participating in a marathon to ensure your heart is healthy.

When it comes to food, your diet should be rich in fibre, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein. Your plate should contain a smaller portion of carbohydrates, a moderate amount of protein, and a generous serving of fruits and vegetables. Avoiding fried and processed food is the way to a healthy heart. Women also tend to lose iron during menstruation, so they should be mindful of consuming foods that are fortified with iron.

A person’s mental well-being plays a vital role in maintaining good heart health. In India, where many women juggle demanding jobs, household responsibilities, and caregiving, stress management isn’t a luxury — it’s survival. Yoga or meditation is a great way to relax the mind and body and helps in regulating stress effectively.

If someone has a family history of heart disease, they should start regular check-ups from the age of 20. Preventive health check-ups are truly a game changer.

Another important aspect Dr. Rajeshwari spoke about was the importance of administering CPR in a heart emergency. When someone collapses or becomes unresponsive, knowing how to perform CPR can make the difference between life and death. It helps keep blood and oxygen flowing until the ambulance arrives. Dr. Rajeshwari emphasizes that it’s not just doctors or healthcare professionals who should know CPR — everyone should learn it. You don’t need to be a doctor to save a life — you just need to act fast.

Your heart beats for everyone you love — it’s time to make sure it stays strong for you too.
