Asian Games Gold Medalist Vinesh Phogat Gets Engaged In The Most Adorable Way!

Too cute for words!

Days after wrestler Vinesh Phogat won India’s second Gold medal at the Asian Games this year, the 23-year-old has another big news. Taking to Instagram, Vinesh shared that she is engaged to her longtime boyfriend merely hours after landing in India!

The flyweight wrestler got engaged to long-time boyfriend Somvir Rathi on Saturday right after she returned from Jakarta, with the engagement happening at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Somvir Rathi is a Greco-Roman wrestler and the two even cut a cake in the presence of both the families.

Incidentally, it was her birthday on August 25 and she shared images from that day, right from the cake-cutting to pictures of her with her family.

At the Asian Games, Vinesh defeated Japan’s Irie Yuki 6-2 to win gold in women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling thus becoming the first ever Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal. Vinesh took a 4-0 lead initially before stretching it further to 6-2 to win the coveted medal. Her win was the second gold won by India in this year’s Asian Games, with the 24-year-old wrestler, Bajrang Punia, bagging the gold medal on Sunday first.

Vinesh managed to qualify while her two cousins, Geeta and Babita, missed the qualification spot. To her credit, Vinesh has won several other golds in the past including one at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast this year and the Spanish Grand Prix this month.

She had earlier won 11-0, beating South Korea’s Kim Hyungjoo in the quarter-finals, after defeating China’s Sun Yanan with 8-2 in the 1/8 finals. Post her win, she attributed her strengths to the entire nation for being there for her.

Her other achievements include the 2013 Asian Wrestling Championships where she won the bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 52 kg category. That same year, at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, Vinesh finished second and won the silver medal in the women’s freestyle 51 kg category.

The next year, at the Commonwealth Games, Vinesh won the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category. She beat Yana Rattigan of England for her first gold. That same, at the Asian Games, she won the bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 48 kg category.
