Why Does My Skin Bother You?

It shouldn’t, actually?

“I work for a psychometrics firm and that consists of consultant psychologists visiting the firm for a report check. I remember a psychologist (She’s a woman by the way), whom I have never met before, going to the receptionist and asking me to cover up. I remember wearing a shirt with a very small slit above – it was a beautiful Kalamkari top which I paired up with jeans. I was covered up and yet commented on the reason why I had put up the post.

She further added, “I work for a corporate with 600 employees and “mild” rules and regulations that it expects us to adhere to. The way they stare – both men and women, is disturbing. You cannot wear sleeveless, you cannot wear leggings and most of all, no ankle-length jeans. These rules crop up because the way men stare when you wear a shirt is uncomfortable and annoying. They even say that they can see skin through the gaps of in between the buttons. On wearing a netted sleeve, the minute amount of skin seen through the nets is also a problem. This corporate culture I worked under shocked me.”

A female body should not be that offensive. Everybody has shoulders, thighs, legs, ankle neckline. I do support the “feed the nipple” concept. A woman’s body is no different from that of a mans. It’s really sad that wearing sleeveless or leggings are not considered formal. I really hope that society would change and mind their own business and there are no stereo typical remarks like this in future. My body should not be considered offensive and that people look at us as only objects. That is why I wrote this status since this bothers me,” she concluded.

Ramya is one of the thousands of women who go through the exact same situation maybe not in their workplaces but while in a public transport or in a marketplace. I, the author of this article, have encountered personal experiences when two women and a man made fun of me for lifting my hand up and tying my hair because they could see the shape of my breasts.

Covering up or showing it is every individual’s wish. It’s high time we stop this ogling and lewd comments situation over something as minute as skin which every living being is made of, don’t you think?
