He Said Yes: The Amala-Nagarjuna Love Story!

He said, “Yes.”

We still remember her acrobatics in the songs “Roja Poo” from Agni Natchathiram and “Maanin Iru Kangal” from Mappillai.  Making her way into the film industry with the film “Mythili Ennai Kaathali” (1986) where she proved her mettle as a sound Bharatnatyam dancer, Amala was cast in 8 other movies in the same year.

In an era that was filled with talented heroines who were all performers in their own right, she rose as a star, giving back to back hits through the 80’s (and early 90’s), becoming a household name in the industry who people came to adore and love.  She was one of the very few actresses who was also equally successful in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam film industries, with a few Bollywood titles to her credit.

With back to back hits, Amala was at the peak of her career when she decided to marry Nagarjuna. With a blush on her face and glitter in her eyes, she shares her sweet little love story, “Well like movies, love and marriage also happened. Nag surprised me out of the blue and asked me to marry him. After all the euphoria and excitement subsided, I asked him, “Will we move to Hyderabad?”

He said, “Yes.” I said, “I don’t have to rush to work?” He said, “If you don’t want to you need not my dear. You can do whatever you like to do.” I was so excited at that thought. I was tired of continuously working and living life out of a suitcase. About 50 films in 8 years is a lot, so I was really exhausted. When Nag proposed to me, I felt like I was going on a long holiday. It’s been 23 years now and it has been a very beautiful journey with him.”
