The movie is expected to go on floors in March and is to be co-produced by Deepika Padukone. Actor Vikrant Massey has been roped in to play the male lead. He will essay the role of Laxmi’s former partner, Alok Dixit.
Chhapaak is about Laxmi Agarwal a resident of Delhi. This acid attack survivor was just a school student (15-years-old) when her whole life change. She was attacked by a man, who was twice her age. This man proposed marriage and he threw acid on her for rejecting his advances. Her face and body parts were disfigured with this incident. Laxmi underwent multiple surgeries in a span of 10 years and this affected her mental health. However, this did not stop her from throwing her attacker behind bars.
She also filed a PIL seeking new law or amendment to curb the sale of acid in the country. She also asked for a total ban. Her efforts bore fruit in 2013 when Supreme Court ruled in her favor and set restrictions on the sale of acid.
With lots of challenges and determination, Laxmi tried to get her life back on track. She hosted a TV show and walked the ramp for several designers.
In 2014 she received International Women of Courage Award from former First Lady of United States of America, Michelle Obama. In the same year, she founded Chhanv Foundation, an NGO that aims to help acid attack survivors. She heads this organization.
Laxmi met her partner Alok Dixit, a journalist and social activist. The two did not married but have a baby named Pihu. The two separated owing to some difference.
