Samantha In ’96’ Telugu Remake?

Will she step into Trisha’s shoes?

Speculations have been rife that there will be a Telugu remake of the recently released Tamil film ’96’ that starred Trisha Krishnan and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles. The film, directed by C Premkumar, has been making waves at the box-office, making it one of the best Kollywood films in recent times.

Telugu film industry’s top producer Dil Raju will be bankrolling the remake under his banner Sri Venkateswara Creations. So far, the lead actors have not been finalised although it is speculated that Samantha Akkineni might play the role of Jaanu. Actor Nani was rumoured to have been interested in the role but turns out, he’s only interested in co-producing it.

The news of Samantha playing Trisha’s role is abuzz now with neither the producers nor the actress herself confirming this.

The original film has created a massive craze among fans. The two characters in the film – Ram and Jaanu – are popular as memes and quotes on the internet, in addition to many trying to emulate these two. A romantic drama, the film is a poem of sorts, of the reunion of two high school lovers and a poignant look at their story 22 years later. Trisha’s character has become so popular, that even the outfit she wears is something that most apparel stores are stocking up on. Playing Jaanu aka Janaki Devi, Trisha is seen wearing a simple yellow kurta, light blue jeans and a blue silk stole with hair tied into a low ponytail and a tiny bindi on the forehead.

Meanwhile, Samantha Akkineni has had a lot of releases in 2018 alone. She’s had five releases (including 2 bilinguals) that have done well at the box-office. She started her year with ‘Rangasthalam’, then ‘Mahanati’ (‘Nadigaiyar Thilagam’ in Tamil), ‘Irumbu Thirai’, ‘Seema Raja’, and ‘U-Turn’ (in Tamil and Telugu). In the pipeline, she has ‘Super Deluxe’ that’s slated to release soon, wherein she plays a girl called Vaembu.
