In an interview with Times of India, Rakul said, “I have been a big fan and recreating the diva on screen for the first time is a big responsibility. I hope I can do justice to it. The makers have full faith in me and I hope I can live up to it.”
Sridevi Boney Kapoor died on February 24 this year owing at the age of 54 due to a case of accidental drowning in Dubai. Her death left many heartbroken considering she was, despite acting in fewer films, still considered a reigning queen in Indian cinema. Sridevi has been honoured posthumously several times including winning a National Award for her performance in Mom, an IIFA award for her performance in the same as well as an honorary mention at Cannes Film Festival.
The movie is directed by Krish Jagarlamudi. Actor Balakrishna and Vishnu Induri finance the project. Balakrishna, son of the late actor-turned-politician, will take on the lead role. His onscreen wife will be played by Vidya Balan, playing NTR’s wife Basavatarakam.
Keerthy Suresh will reprise her role as Savitri. Savitri and NT Rama Rao, two yesteryear actors, had shared the screen several times in that era and had even delivered several blockbuster hits together. With Keerthy Suresh almost immortalizing the role, it’s only fitting to have her accept the role again, considering how she has left an indelible mark on many.
Incidentally, last year, Ram Gopal Varma had announced his Telugu film Lakshmi’s NTR. RGV had emphasised that instead of making the biopic from the perspective of NTR, he will narrate it from the perspective of his second wife Lakshmi Parvathi.
The film is slated for a January release next year.
