Those who have read Ponniyin Selvan would know that Trisha, who plays Kundavai Piratti and Aishwarya Rai, who plays Nandhini, don’t get along in the story. In fact, in some way, we can say that the story is all about how Nandhini and Kundavai fight for their ambitions. In a recent chat with a Media House, Trisha opened up about sharing the screen with Aishwarya in the film and revealed that director Mani Ratnam didn’t want them to get along. However, the actresses got along really well, unlike their onscreen characters. “I, fortunately, got to meet her and interact with her on Day 1 of my shoot, and she is beautiful inside out. And it was challenging because we are not supposed to like each other too much in this film. But we got along pretty famously on set. There were times when Mani Ratnam sir would come and say – you guys are talking too much. Stop talking, I can’t have this camaraderie for my scene,” revealed Trisha recalling her shoot days with Aishwarya Rai.
“She is lovely to work with and I’m sure everyone who worked with her would agree with me. She is so warm and is one of THE most hardworking actors I’ve worked with. She spoke Sen-Thamizh like how it has to be spoken. She was getting ready with us at 2 Am. I’m very honoured that I could share screen space with her,” the Ponniyin Selvan actress concluded. For the unversed, Mani Ratnam attempted to make Ponniyin Selvan back in 1990 itself. Back then he wanted to do the film along with Kamal Haasan as the lead. He also wanted to cast veteran actress Rekha for the role of Nandhini as well as the role of Mandakini Devi. But the film didn’t take off, and it took two decades for the director to redecide on the film in 2011. That role is now being performed by Aishwarya Rai.
The team announced that Ponniyin Selvan will be the first Tamil movie to be released in the IMAX format. This will ensure that the audience will have the larger-than-life experience of watching the film, just like the movie itself. While Ravi Varman is handling the camera for the film, Sreekhar Prasad is handling the edit and Thotta Tharani is designated for the Production Design of the film. The film is bankrolled by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies. The music director for the movie is AR Rahman. PS-1 is slated for a worldwide release on September 30, 2022, in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
