Nikhat Zareen And Lovlina Borgohain Bag Gold At The Women’s World Boxing Championship!

Congratulations on the big win!

India’s Nikhat Zareen defeated two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tham on Sunday at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Delhi to become world champion for the second successive time.  Nikhat is now the second female boxer from India to win multiple gold medals at the World Championships after Mary Kom. She defeated Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam in the 50kg category. Lovlina Borgohain clinched gold in the 75kg category. Nikhat Zareen registered a 5-0 victory in the final bout against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam to claim India’s third gold in the tournament before Lovlina Borgohain won the summit clash against Australia’s Caitlin Parker with a split 5-2 verdict.

Nikhat won the intense contest against Thi Tam with a unanimous decision. She was on fire throwing continuous strikes against a cool-headed Thi Tam who tried to keep things under control. Zareen connected with a left jab and from then on it was a series of punches from the Indian pugilist.”I am very happy with the result I got for myself, personally it is a big achievement for me because it is my second time becoming the world champion but in a different weight category. It was a rollercoaster ride against my opponent in this final and finally when my hand was raised I could not control my happiness. Next target for me is the Asian Games where I will eye a similar result,” said Nikhat after the historic win.

After Lovlina edged the first round 3-2, and lost the second round 1-4, it was a tense and dramatic finish to the bout which ended in India’s favour after a contentious third round went in favour of Lovlina 3-2, and both the observer and evaluator awarded their points from the bout review to the Indian for her to win 5-2. “This bout was a big test,” she told the media after the bout. “I didn’t succeed fully, only 90%, in the strategy we had planned. The plan was to be on the offensive in the first two rounds and stay defensive on the third. Our coaches told me to stay on the counter-attack, and I’m glad it worked.”
