Jency’s academic journey is rooted in resilience. A native of Tiruttani, she navigated numerous challenges, both societal and institutional, to chase her dreams. She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Dr Ambedkar College of Arts and Science before earning her PhD at Loyola College itself.
Currently appointed on a contractual basis, Jency is hopeful about transitioning into a permanent position. “This moment isn’t just about me. It’s about what it symbolizes for the transgender community, the right to be seen, to be educated, and to belong,” she said.
Despite competing with five other candidates during the recruitment process, Jency was selected purely on merit. Having lost both her parents, she has carved her path independently, often working part-time as a tutor, emcee, and radio announcer during her MPhil to save for her gender-affirming surgery. It was during this period that she came out to her mother and sister. “They were initially shocked,” she recalls, “but they never doubted my future.”
Today, she uses her voice to advocate for education within the transgender community. “Education can be a powerful equaliser. I urge other trans persons to focus on learning, it has the power to reshape lives.”
Dr. P Mary Vidya Porselvi, Head of the English Department at Loyola, emphasized the impact of Jency’s appointment. “Her academic record and commitment are outstanding. She teaches general and spoken English to undergraduates, and students have responded positively. Her presence adds a valuable dimension to our institution.”
Jency’s entry into academia marks a meaningful shift, not just in policy, but in perception, towards a more inclusive and equitable educational space in Tamil Nadu.
