The film, directed by PS Vinothraj, showcases the story of a young boy and how his equation with his violent and alcoholic father leads him on a quest to fetch back his mother.
The film has already been screened at numerous international film festivals. It won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival of Rotterdam this year, becoming the first Tamil film to earn the recognition. The announcement of its official entry came from producer Vignesh Shivan.

Numerous other celebrities congratulated the director and the producers for this achievement. Vicky Kaushal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu are few who shared their wishes.
When filmmaker Shaji Karun was asked why Koozhangal was chosen over the other movies, he said, “If you look at the movies that we’re going to compete with at the Oscars, it’s like on the level of the Olympics. We should know what we’re up against. Looking at the festivals across the world that win awards, they all have one common thread – humanism. The idea of the human heart triumphing over all obstacles. That quality is common to all cultures. We wanted to select a film that celebrated humanism. If we selected a political film or a film on a specific cultural event, it could easily be bypassed if it doesn’t match the political ideologies of the people viewing the film at the Oscars.”
Rowdy Pictures has produced only 2 films till date, Netrikann and Koozhangal. The production house has now signed up to bankroll ‘Oor Kuruvi’ starring Kavin. Koozhangal, being the first production of Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan has reached great heights for the duo!
