Kollywood Report Card 2016: Hits And Misses Of The Year!

Tamil Cinema in 2016 has introduced us to various new genres, apart from the regular cliches that have previously worked with the audiences. Especially in the year 2016, we see the South Indian film fraternity covering genres like comedy thriller and romance, to introducing us to Zombie thriller and having time travel movies, we have pretty much experimented a whole lot of ideas.

Movie buffs will understand what we are talking about! Here’s a closer look at Kollywood this year!

THERI

An Tamil film written and directed by Atlee and produced by Kalaipuli. S thanu, Theri was star studded with Samantha, Vijay and Amy Jackson in lead roles! Releasing in April, the movie was a much anticipated one with a lot of buzz surrounding it.

The story line was fairly predictable and Vijay’s skills were exposed in the melodramatic scenes.  Sure we don’t go watch a Vijay film expecting logic, we go to relive the Vijay – Mass Entertainer’ moments and that is exactly why the movie made it big. This Vijay starrer made Rs 21 crore in Tamil Nadu in just two days and went on to make 100 crore in a week! So we can say that it was ‘Hit’ due to the stellar cast.

24

Indian Science fiction thriller, 24, written and directed by Vikram Kumar based on an interesting concept like time travel, sure did turn a lot of heads in the industry!

24 had a brilliant cast with all our favorite actors in a single frame, Suriya, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nitya Menon in lead roles.

According to critics, Suriya’s  Athreya role is the most memorable one and Vikram Kumar had done a brilliant job with the visualization! A powerful plot-line that has made the audience break from the concept of time/space and allows them to shuffle between the past and the future. While, Sci-fi fans are bound to love the movie, it may have not worked for audiences that are into logic based plots!

We reckon it was a hit! What do you guys think?

KABALI

The much awaited movie of the finally made it to screens in July this year. The euphoria surrounding the release made the audience have a much greater expectation from the Thalaivar movie. Kabali is written and directed by P.A Ranjith and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. The film cast Mr. Rajinikanth as the main lead, alongside Radhika Apte, Dhansika, Dinesh Ravi, Kalaiyarasan and John Vijay.

Thailava craze seems to be never ending and Kabali fans are all over the place to show what they are capable of. Starting with the release of the music album, soundtrack ‘Neruppu da’ has set the internet on fire, even better was the release of the movie that saw fans paint the town red!

You know it’s a blockbuster when you wait all night to watch a morning show the next day, and fans are still out there celebrating the movie post release. Yet an super fan from this list would be M.S Dhoni! So we give Kabali a hit!

SETHUPATHI

A 2016 action-thriller Sethupathi is a 2016 Indian Tamil-language action thriller directed by S.U Arun Kumar.

Vijay Sethupathi and Remya Nambeesan are in the leading roles and by far, the movie has only received positive reviews from the critics. A brilliant actor like Sethupathi can act in any role possible and this time he took a challenging role of a police officer from Madurai and the dramatic plot kept the audiences engaged throughout the movie. The role of Vijay Sethupathi is commendable in the movie, but the critics suggest the movie was more of a family drama than a thriller!

We give Sethupathi a definite hit!

IRUDHI SUTTRU

A film written and directed by Sudha Kongara is a sports drama film that was simultaneously shot in Tamil and Hindi. Featuring R. Madhavan in the leading role  as a boxing coach and a newcomer Ritika Singh as an inspiring boxer, Irudhi Suttru was a heart warming dramatic movie!

According to critics, the movie isn’t just another ‘Million dollar baby’, there is a lit bit of drama, sibling rivalry and some critics are calling it a ‘Glove story’.  The multi power pack of a plot has taken the audiences to another level of emotional experience and you have to watch it to believe it!

We love Maddy and he has been stealing our hearts even since he stepped into the industry, from the chocolate boy look to being an inspiring boxing coach, we love watching Madhavan on screen! Giving the movie a definite hit, go watch Irudhi Suttru to experience the magical roller coaster of emotions!

MIRUTHAN

The first ever Tamil zombie thriller, Miruthan is written and directed by Shakti Soundar Rajan starring Jayam Ravi and Lakshmi Menon in leading roles.

Being the first ever in this genre, steering away from the regular clichés was an added advantage to the movie, but looks like it did not work too well with the audiences!

The plot revolves around people of Ooty turning into zombies due to a viral infection! Miruthan, a police officer and his love interest, Laxmi Menon, who plays a doctor in the movie, trying to save the day, like any other zombie movie! With some minor twists and turns, a zombie movie is ready.

Displeased with this, many critics suggest the plot-line was weak and the music was a let-down! Miruthan can be better, but it was a definite miss this time!

BANGALORE NAATKAL

A sweet remake of Bangalore days, Bangalore Naatkal is a Tamil comedy drama directed by Bommarillu Bhaskar is written and directed by Anjali Menon. A fantastic cast with Arya, Sri Divya and Bobby Simha in lead roles, tells us the stories of three cousins who relocate to the city of Bangalore to transform their lives! The movie failed to recreate the magic the original Malayalam blockbuster did and failed at the box-office. With a regular story line, the movie was pretty predictable with no actual substance in it – critics suggest!

Sorry to disappoint you, but the movie is nothing close to the legendary, Bangalore Days!

JIL JUNG JUK

Directed by Deeraj Vaidy,  Jil Jung Jik is a neo-noir post apocalyptic black comedy film starring Siddharth, Avinash Raghudevan and Sananth Reddy in the leading roles!

When it is a power cast like the one mentioned above, you expect it to be a hit. However, according to many critics the movie did not make it to the top list! Many critics suggest that the movie should have been named, ‘Quirk quirk quirk’ for it’s eccentric and out of the world ideas, but unfortunately the genre did not appeal to the audience! A great attempt that failed to mint numbers at the box-office.

IRAIVI

A romantic drama written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj of National award winning Jigarthanda fame, the movie was a let down for many. Featuring S.J Surja, Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Anjali, Kamalinee Mukherjee and Pooja Devariya, the film bombed at the box-office! Iraivi is an unusual feminist flick which failed to make the audience understand its subtle message. For a feminist movie, the film revolves around three men and their lives and tells us how their actions affect the women in their lives.

Although, the movie throws light on modern day women issues, it has failed to convey the message the audiences. Unfortunately, this remains a miss in 2016.

KADHALUM KADANDHU POGUM

This movie was highly expected one as the last time Nalan Kumaraswamy and Vijay Sethupathi joined hands they delivered the smashing hit Soodhu Kavvum which was a complete laugh riot. Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum disappointed the audience the chemistry between the lead pair Madonna Sebastian and Vijay Sethupathi did not work well and overall the movie swayed a lot and did not stick to a point.
