Kaashmora Review: Promising Trailer, Disappointing Movie!

Kaashmora (Tamil)

Director: Gokul

Cast: Karthi, Nayanthara, Sri Divya

We were all really thrilled, full of expectations after viewing the trailer of Kaashmora but the film falls flat. The trailer had viewers and fans awaiting a great film but the movie just manages to make it to the list of ‘watchables’ this year. Director Gokul perhaps made the right choice by opting for a multi genre film because the humour is what keeps it going.

Kaashmora has Karthi in three roles. The present day Karthi (Kaashmora) is a black magic healer who makes his living by cheating innocent people making them believe in ghosts and paranormal entities. He along with his family masters the art of deception and this is where things start to get exciting. However, the film goes on a downward (yet hilarious) spiral when he comes across a palace that houses an actual ghost.

In the other role, Karthi plays Raj Nayak, a brave warrior who has unfinished business with Rathnamahadevi (Nayanthara). Raj Nayak is known for his valour but women are his weakness. He kills Rathnamahadevi’s father and brother and forcefully marries her. Mahadevi on the other hand seduces him and plans to kill him. Just when he is about to die, Raj Nayak drives a sword into Mahadevi, making their battle continue decades later. In his third role, Karthi’s performance is stellar and should be the one you watch the movie for.

Vivek’s performance as Kaashmora’s father is remarkable. The film has a large amount of humour packed in but somewhere, a few characters were very insignifcant. Sri Divya’s character in the film is not a value addition to the movie other than being just another pretty face. Karthi’sperformance as the black magic healer and a badass villain are both commendable. Nayanthara literally steals the show with her stunning look. However, looks speak louder than perfromance.

Kaashmora fails to deliver both logic and what could’ve been a refreshing story is not refreshing after all. The VFX and background score have to be appreciated. On the whole, Kaashmora is a movie that can be watched for sheer entertainment and nothing else.

Stars: 2 and a half

Verdict: A one-time watch for the humour, the VFX and the one and only, Karthi.
