Just In: Madras HC Orders Stay On Broadcast of Tamil Reality TV Show ‘Solvathellam Unmai’!

The reality show is hosted by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan.

Solvathellam Unmai, the Tamil reality show hosted by actress and filmmaker Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, has been ordered a stay on its broadcast till June 18 by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. This stay comes after Kalyana Sundaram from Virudhunagar district had reportedly filed a petition in court, stating that the show affected poor people’s individual rights and that there was no privacy given.

His petition included the following points:

“The host asks person who is sitting at the studio to narrate what happened to them without concerning about their right to privacy. Usually the programme records all the alleged illicit relationship issues pertaining to the individuals. It is pertinent to mention that sometimes in view of the same purposeful questions the participant goes from raging verbal abusive to physical assault. (sic)”

He also added that ‘the anchor motivates the emotion of participant to higher level with the purpose to her show’s Target Rating Point(TRP)…The show is portraying many persons’ personal life without any consideration of their privacy.’

The reality show has found in itself in troubled waters several times in the past mostly owing to its controversial nature and displaying peoples’ private lives on television. The show started out in 2011, with the format resembling that of ‘kangaroo courts’. In 2016,  a man committed suicide allegedly after he was accused of being a paedophile on the show. In the episode, he confessed to sexually abusing his sister-in-law’s two minor children, one 14 and the other 10 with his ex-wife and sister-in-law present at the show.

In 2014, the show had faced more criticism after a woman named Baby Kala had confessed to abetting the murder of her husband by her lover. The murder, which allegedly happened in 2010, was spoken about on the show in April. Since then, the woman and her love were arrested by the police with Lakshmy asked to appear in court as a witness.
