In a historic first, Ethiraj College for Women has opened its doors to a transgender student. P. Shivin, a transwoman from Theni, was admitted to the BCom (Computer Science) programme on Wednesday, with a full scholarship granted by the institution.

The admission letter was officially handed over to Shivin by college chairman V.M. Muralidharan, in the presence of principal Dr. S. Uma Gowrie and other faculty members.

Shivin’s path to higher education has been marked by resilience and determination. “Completing school in Theni itself was a major struggle. I received support from a few trans persons in Chennai who helped me apply to Ethiraj, and I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity,” she said.

Having lost her parents years ago and with minimal support from her siblings, Shivin hopes to pursue a career in the IT sector. “I want to be financially independent and be a source of inspiration to others in the transgender community,” she added.

Chairman Muralidharan described the moment as a significant milestone for the institution. “Admitting a transgender student for the first time reflects our commitment to inclusivity and building a more equitable society,” he said.
