Recent abduction and assault of a Malayalam actress shook the industry, but how many stars stood up and spoke in support? Apart from Prithviraj, Mohan Lal, Dulquer, Nivin and few others, not many of the stars spoke out. Do they know that they are encouraging stalking, bullying and eve-teasing in their movies? Yes, the men around us need to have a mind of their own and not fall for such ridiculous standards of pleasing women, but why showcase such acts and glorify them? And then when such incidents occur, not speak up against them?
It’s not only the recent ones. Movies which date back to decades are also a great example of how the men stalk, tease and bully the actresses and then live happily ever after. We’re not blaming the movies for the crimes committed by some sick minds, but why glorify them?
When these situations occur in real life, many of them disappear and refrain from speaking out. We want to take examples but there are too many to quote. Yes, across this generation and across all fields, we need to stand up against eve-teasing and bullying, but may be some of the influential ones can leave a greater impact? Continued….
It’s not only about Indian cinema, at the recent Academy awards, Casey Affleck won the Best actor award for his performance in ‘Manchester By The Sea’. He’s not proven guilty, but there are two cases of sexual assault still running in the courts against him. Giving him the award proves that no one really cares about ‘sexual assault’ in Hollywood. It would be rather sad, if those female filmmakers who accused him of the assault are proven right.
Closer home, many super stars have proved that all they care about is looking promising onscreen and bringing home the big bucks. From all those stars who have a history of assaulting their better halves in real lives to those who use stalking, teasing as the foundation of their films, stand up before the next generation looks back at you with disgust!
