Dear ‘Heroes’, It’s Time You Take A Stand!

Kudos to the ones who spoke out!

Just why do our male stars keep mum on issues which need their attention; especially when it comes to women? Print archives point out that only a handful of male stars voice out their opinion on issues surrounding women. You may argue that they need to just look macho onscreen and need not stand up on issues which affect the other gender. However, when you know your sense of style can sell millions of commercial products, why not use the popularity to educate and guide your fans?

Recent abduction and assault of a Malayalam actress shook the industry, but how many stars stood up and spoke in support? Apart from Prithviraj, Mohan Lal, Dulquer, Nivin and few others, not many of the stars spoke out. Do they know that they are encouraging stalking, bullying and eve-teasing in their movies? Yes, the men around us need to have a mind of their own and not fall for such ridiculous standards of pleasing women, but why showcase such acts and glorify them? And then when such incidents occur, not speak up against them?

It’s not only the recent ones. Movies which date back to decades are also a great example of how the men stalk, tease and bully the actresses and then live happily ever after. We’re not blaming the movies for the crimes committed by some sick minds, but why glorify them?

When these situations occur in real life, many of them disappear and refrain from speaking out. We want to take examples but there are too many to quote. Yes, across this generation and across all fields, we need to stand up against eve-teasing and bullying, but may be some of the influential ones can leave a greater impact?  Continued….
