Baar Baar Dekho Review: A Great Attempt Failed By Its Actors!

Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Katrina Kaif, Ram Kapoor, Sarika
Director: Nitya Mehra

This is the story of childhood sweethearts, Jai (Sidharth) and Diya (Katrina) and how their relationship unravels through the course of time. Which is technically not time that is passing by, just some time travelling that Jai gets to do to understand the importance of the ‘little’ moments in life.

Jai and Diya have been together since the day they met. When they come of age, the next step is to eventually get married and start a family. While Diya is all invested in the relationship, Jai is more angled towards his love for Mathematics and his ambitions. After a fall-out before the day of the wedding, Jai tells Diya that he doesn’t want this life, that his dreams and aspirations are more important to him. The series of “sleeping and waking up” then show his life’s ‘highlights’ which eventually lead to him losing his love and his family. So, he is sent back in time to make amends and like any Bollywood movie, the hero gets the girl and they live happily ever after.

The highlights of the movie are the foot tapping music, the wardrobe and the breathtaking locations. The movie lacks depth, passion and chemistry between the lead pair but what makes it worse are its actors. The performances are a complete let down, if only Katrina could bring half of the confidence and expressions that she emotes during a dance number. Her lack of talent in acting is evident and it’s high time she realizes that she needs to pull her act up. Sidharth on the other hand isn’t as bad. He is hard working and seems to have made a noticeable transition from Student of the Year to now. But in spite of that, both the actors do no justice to the roles. It’s hard to accept Sidharth as a mathematician and Katrina as an artist, two roles that could have appealed more if they had better actors.

While the movie is not entirely bad, it has its fair share of pluses but the shortcomings are so many that you completely want to ignore the good bits. You’d definitely want to ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ the songs, they take away the cake in this one, but the movie, not so much. It’s a sad excuse for a “high-concept” movie. Its time Bollywood realized that the audience prefers watching a good film over good-looking actors.
