All You Need To Know About The Hema Committee!

The Hema Committee, formed in 2017 by the Kerala government, was tasked with investigating the conditions faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. This investigation was triggered by the abduction and sexual assault of a female actor in 2017.

The report was prepared by a committee led by Justice K. Hema, which was established in 2017 by the Kerala government under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to investigate the challenges faced by women in the film industry and recommend solutions.

The Justice Hema Committee Report, released on August 19, 2024, revealed widespread sexual exploitation and abuse within the Malayalam film industry. The report was published after redacting the identity of the accused persons. But, following the publication, women from the industry started coming forward with their accusations against the big names of the Kerala movie industry including Actor Siddique and Director Ranjith ( director of Njan movie).

Following the allegations, Siddique quit as the general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) and Ranjith resigned as Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairperson.

The Kerala High Court questioned the Kerala government about its plans regarding the accusations mentioned in the report. In response, on August 26, the Kerala government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations and revelations made against prominent figures in Malayalam cinema.

The Hema Committee report reveals that well-known men in Malayalam cinema have sexually harassed women in the industry. The report identifies sexual harassment as a major issue faced by women in the film industry. Many women are reluctant to speak out due to fear of being blacklisted, further harassment, or targeted on social media. They also fear threats to their lives and the safety of their families, leading to a culture of silence in the industry.

The report reveals that many men in the film industry believe women who act in intimate scenes are willing to engage in such acts off-set as well. This leads to open, unembarrassed demands for sex, often in exchange for more opportunities in cinema, despite the women’s objections. Newcomers are particularly vulnerable to this exploitation.

The report highlights the lack of basic facilities like toilets, changing rooms, and safe caravans for women on Malayalam film sets, leading to severe health issues such as urinary infections. Women often resort to urinating behind trees or bushes during outdoor shoots and face extreme difficulties during menstruation due to a lack of water and sanitary facilities. These issues primarily affect junior artists, as caravans are only provided to top actors. While some men in the industry acknowledge the problem, others dismiss it, claiming women have “adjusted” to these conditions for years.

The latest report from the Justice Hema Committee has shocked the industry, revealing that several Malayalam female actors and junior artists have accused prominent figures—including director Baburaj, actors Siddique, Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, Edavela Babu, Thulasidas, and CPI-M MLA Vichu Mukesh of sexual harassment and misconduct. These serious allegations have reignited discussions on harassment and inequality in the Malayalam film industry, highlighting the urgent need for effective measures and accountability.
