Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

 

One of the best biopics of all time, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was an exceptional film about the Indian athlete who went on to become a national champion and an Olympian. The movie covers the athlete’s life from his early childhood days to the numerous laps he ran to earn the tile of ‘The Flying Sikh’. Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh was par excellence, the supporting cast was equally amazing in their roles, Divya Dutta as Milkha’s elder sister, Pavan Malhotra as Hawaldar  Gurudev Singh, Prakash Raj as Veerapandian and the others who helped make this film epic.

Mary Kom

 

While the movie was a tad bit over dramatic for its story-line, Priyanka Chopra as the victorious boxer was true to its performance. Her struggles as a woman, trying to strike a balance between career and family and how she emerges as the Women’s World Boxing Champion is what makes this film a thorough inspiring watch.

Neerja

 

Narrating the story of the country’s brave heart, Neerja Bhanot, this film was a tragic story about the air hostess who saved 359 lives aboard a hijacked Pan Am flight. Sonam Kapoor as Neerja was promising with the support of Shabana Azmi who played the mother and delivered a commendable performance. A special mention goes to Jim Sarbh who played the hijacker, left a lasting memory on our minds.

Shahid

 

A hard hitting film on how minorities in the country are wrongly convicted, Shahid is a real life story on Shahid Azmi, a human rights activist and lawyer who was murdered in 2010 in Mumbai. Shahid played by Rajkumar Rao fights for Muslims who are wrongly branded as terrorists for their religion. The film made us realize the sad reality behind ‘convictions’ in bomb blast cases. It also underlined us how social stigma and stereotypes ruin people’s lives.

Sarabjit

 

The story was about the struggles of a sister fighting for her brother who is convicted as an Indian spy in Pakistan. While the movie received a lot of mixed reviews, Aishwarya Rai and Randeep Hooda were appreciated for the portrayal of the brother sister duo.  The movie was liked for its strong story line and the touchy subject.

Manjhi- The Mountain Man

 

Widely appreciated for the performance of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Manjhi is the story of Dashrath Manjhi. It’s based on the life of this poor laborer in Gehlaur village in Bihar.  When his wife dies because of a serious injury during her climbing the Gehlaur hills, the man is devastated. He takes 22 years to carve a path 30 ft wide and 360 ft long through a hill 25 ft using only a hammer and chisel.

Budhia Singh : Born to Run

 

This is the biographical movie based on the life of the worlds’ youngest marathon runner, Budhia Awooga Singh. He is a 5 year old belonging to the state of Odisha. He ran from Puri to Bhubaneshwar when he was 4 years old covering a good 65 km in just 7 hours and 2 minutes. He was recorded to be the world’s youngest marathon runner in the Limca book of records 2006. In the film, Mayur Patole plays Budhia and Manoj Bajpayee plays his coach.

Dangal

 

One of the most awaited films of the year, Dangal stars Aamir Khan as the father who taught his daughters to wrestle. Aamir plays the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. His daughter’s Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat were India’s first female wrestler to win at the 2010 Commonwealth.  All set to release this year end, Dangal is definitely on our watch list.
