5 Women-centric Sports Biopic

Women power!

Sports films have a connect with the audience. Many biopics of prominent sports personalities were made in the past and they managed to make it big too. While predominantly it was hero-centric, now there are several movies on women sports personality. These movies highlight women in sport and how they struggle and work hard to get noticed. Here is the list of such movies that hit the screens and few that are waiting to take wings.

Kanaa (Aishwarya Rajesh)


A versatile actress who proved her mettle with films like Kaaka Muttai and Chekka Chivandha Vaanam, Aishwarya Rajesh plays a woman cricketer in Kanaa. Produced by Sivakarthikeyan and directed by Arunraja Kamaraja, it is the story of a young woman overcoming challenges to live her dream of becoming a cricket player. Aishwarya wants to play for her country and make her father proud. How she achieves it forms the crux. To get her act right, Aishwarya underwent rigorous training in cricket.

 

 

Ethir Neechal (Nandhitha Swetha)

The young and pretty Nandhitha Swetha impressed everyone playing a challenging role of a sportswoman in Sivakarthikeyan starrer Ethir Neechal. The movie was about a youngster who takes up marathon and wins. He is trained by a former woman athlete and the character is played by Nandhita. Her character was inspired by Tamil Nadu sprinter Santhi Soundarajan, who won 12 international medals for India and around 50 medals for Tamil Nadu. Shanthi is the first Tamil woman to win a medal at the Asian Games. She competes in middle distance track events. She was stripped of a silver medal won at the 2006 Asian Games after failing a sex verification test which disputed her eligibility to participate in the women’s competition.

 

 

Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra)

The undisputed boxing queen of India Mary Kom has a huge fan following. When a movie was made on her, it was Priyanka Chopra who played her on screen. Mary Kom depicts Kom’s journey of becoming a boxer to her victory at the 2008 World Boxing Championships in Ningbo. The movie received several accolades at award ceremonies across India. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Priyanka Chopra’s performance was widely acclaimed and Mary Kom heaped laurels on Priyanka for her wonderful performance.
