Mothers have such a profound influence on our lives, and Mothers’ Day is an opportunity to honour all mothers worldwide. As Mother’s Day draws near, we take a look back at six films with a strong mother-daughter relationship that warmed our hearts.
Also recommend these movies for a watch this weekend, it surely going to make your bond stronger with her. Plan the perfect mother-daughter date and start with one of the movies of her choice.
Kannathil Muthamittal
Featuring R. Madhavan, Simran, Nandita Das, and young artist Keerthana, this is one for the OGs who saw this movie when it was released and were swooning over the Uber-sweet family. It’s about an adopted daughter who is looking for her biological parents. The movie is a testament to how sensitive issues like adoption and birth parents are dealt with. A beautiful tale of a family, this movie went on to be the official submission for numerous international film festivals after winning six national honours.
Amma Kanakku
The 2016 Indian comedy-drama film Amma Kanakku, which was also co-produced by Dhanush and Anand L. Rai, was written and directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari. In this Hindi adaptation of the director’s own 2016 film Nil Battey Sannata, Amala Paul, Yuva Lakshmi, Revathi, and Samuthirakani play the main roles. It is about Shanti, a housemaid who strives towards providing a decent living for her daughter Abhinaya by working in several homes. When Abhinaya’s academic performance doesn’t improve, Shanti chooses to register in her daughter’s school in an effort to inspire her.
English Vinglish
Gauri Shinde wrote and directed the 2012 comedy-drama film English Vinglish which became one of the most loved performances by Sridevi. She plays the role of Shashi Godbole in the film. Shashi, a homemaker and caterer, is frequently teased by her family for not understanding English. Her quest to learn the language allows her to rediscover herself and reaffirm her worth as a mother and wife. In the process, her daughter who always belittled her mother understands how significant and unconditional her presence is in her life.
Varane Avashyamund
Varane Avashyamund stars Shobhana and Kalyani Priyadarshini as the mother-daughter duo who are single. When Shobana’s friendship with Suresh Gopi develops into a companionship, her daughter realises the importance of a partner in her mother’s life. A nuanced film about second chances and the beauty of modern relationships.
Achuvinte Amma
This movie was a comeback for actress Urvashi after a 6-year sabbatical and what a movie to come back with. Meera Jasmine plays her daughter and their banter in the movie is realistic and endearing. Achu’s mother, played by Urvashi adores her, yet despite this, she never talks to her about her father. A breach develops between Achu and her mother when Achu falls in love with an orphan and her mother rejects their relationship.

HER Movie Review : “Five women, five stories—realistic women characters that capture the different versions of women we see every day.
We see women being unapologetically themselves, even if they are flawed, or misunderstood, or do not conform to societal standards.

A Poem on Female Friendships, Closure and Loneliness: All We Imagine As Light Review!
There are ever so few films where a city plays an important character, and even fewer films where women narrate stories. Payal Kapadia’s Cannes Winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’ excels at delivering both.
