Police then started the inquiry with CCTV footage which did not show her leaving the apartment. Hence, they started interrogating the neighbors and narrowed down to a 22-year-old who gave them contradicting answers. Jaswanth, a mechanical engineer working in Mylapore, was a resident of the same apartment. He later confessed to the police that his initial plan was to kidnap Hasini and collect ransom from her parents.
While gagging her mouth, in order to prevent her from making any noise, Hasini died. Not knowing what to do further, he stuffed her body in a travel bag, disposed it in a nearby bush and burnt it using petrol. The girl’s half-burnt body was found near the tollgate in Mugalivakkam.
