Vox Pop: What Do Chennaiites Feel About Sasikala And The Judgement?

The disproportionate case was initiated in the year 1996 by Subramaniya Swamy and the verdict has been passed. Sasikala, along with Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran have been convicted and have been asked to surrender immediately. Now that we know the impact of the verdict, the announcement has raised strong emotions among the people of Tamil Nadu and here are a few opinions:

C S S Latha, Resident Editor, Magna publications Ltd.: “The judgment has reinforced people’s faith in the judiciary. It’s a big relief for the people of Tamil Nadu who have seen all her atrocious anarchic ways firing over the shoulder of Jayalalithaa that also dragged Amma into the mire. There is nothing left to the imagination of what would have happened if she did manage to seize power as she and her accomplice have over the period meticulously spread their kankerous tentacles of successionist elements throughout the state and TN would have witnessed an unleash of undesirables throttling democracy. This precisely was the reason behind people’s anxiety, unrest, and dissent.”

Mathangi Srinivasamurti, Partner, Chamiers: “This has probably been one-of-a-kind mass uprising against one person never before seen in the politics of the State. Essentially I think people perceived her as an opportunist and the person behind the decline of their leader Jayalalithaa. They truly believed that Sasikala was a usurper and her crass claims to being the rightful heir of the AIADMK legacy didn’t go down too well with the entire populace of TN- not only that, the very same family members of Sashikala whom Jayalalithaa had ousted from her inner circle were the same people who surrounded her, seconds after Jayalalithaa’s death. This shocked, saddened and infuriated the people of TN. As Abe Lincoln said, ” You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”

Nagalakshmi.T, Entrepreneur:WHO is she? Has she held any position in politics? If she were a close friend of the Chief Minister ( JJ), is that qualification enough to replace the CM after her demise? Even a late Chairman of a company would ensure his blood relative or a chosen candidate is inducted into the organization; at an appropriate time and carries on responsibility as required. Is this right of Sasikala especially when we are talking about her being the leader of a State like Tamilnadu and not just a private organization? These and more reasons as to why we have such strong feelings against her claim to the CM’s post.”

Bharath Sampath, Software Engineer: “I am pretty happy with the judgement. She is the most hated person in TN now because of three reasons – Sasikala is the reason why Jayalalithaa got into the corruption case which led to her imprisonment, the reason for Jayalalithaa’s death and her desperation for position and wealth. O.Panneerselvam has the support of the people of TN, but he needs to win the majority. If not, anyone of Sasikala’s supporters could become the CM. Although it is a historical judgement, this case needn’t have been 21 years long.”

Sharanya Sarangarajan, Home Maker: “I’m extremely happy today. Sasikala had the audacity to take up the position of the General Secretary immediately after Jayalalithaa’s death. Isn’t it fishy? If Jayalalithaa was that close to her, how would she even have the heart to take up powerful positions so soon? What political qualification does she even have? She has been with Jayalalitha for so long, but was Sasikala ever offered an even position in the AIADMK Party? After Jayalalithaa’s demise, she had the guts to aim for the position of Chief Minister! People voted for Jayalalithaa and not her.”

Aishwarya Ashok, Assistant Director: “I’m not inclined to any political party but off late I’m trying to follow how people’s mind works when it comes to politics. Every other person I know hates Sasikala including me. Now when I think of why it goes back to when Late Jayalalitha was admitted to the hospital and nobody had any clue of what was going on with her expect for Sasikala and her close ones. As a citizen, we have the right to know the status of our leader and we were denied of that. I think that’s where it all started when people slowly started showing their hatred towards Sasikala.”

She further added,”In the last two months, she has been giving out ridiculous interviews and has been showing her urgency in taking up the CM post in order to save herself. We all know that she isn’t well educated but that doesn’t mean she can’t become a leader but a person should possess certain qualifications to be able to handle the responsibilities of a CM and clearly she doesn’t have any. She claims herself to be powerful but keeps proving herself wrong. We cannot hand over our state to someone who is not stable and who only wants this post for her personal needs.”

“Not once in these two months has shown any concern to the people especially during the Jallikattu protest. That could be one of the reasons for the outrage and why so many of us don’t want her to be the Chief Minister. If she doesn’t give priority to the people of the state then it shows that she doesn’t have the ability to become the leader at any cost,” Aishwarya concluded.

Kesavan Narasimhan, Manager: “This is a befitting response to all that Sasikala has done. She has put the people of TN through hell! I am so glad that the ‘Mannargudi Mafia’ has come to a pause. The judgement is indeed historical… Now, let’s wait and watch what O.Panneerselvam does!”

Swetha Renukumar, Fashion Blogger:  “For the first ever time, when the whole of TN was more eager in the judgement than the VDay had finally proved justice. For a woman behind the Lady CM for years has to prove her stand in the demise of Late.J.Jayalalitha and her conveniently ignoring attitude had brought rage amongst the majority of the population, which led to massive hatred against THE TEAM. Not being in a position, or primarily even a party member and transforming the entire politics of ADMK party in less than two months after the death of CM has proved her unworthy and inappropriate for the position of General secretary or the Chief Minister.”

“Not being in a position, or primarily even a party member and transforming the entire politics of ADMK party in less than two months after the death of CM has proved her unworthy and inappropriate for the position of General secretary or the Chief Minister. All the more her greed for prize and possession had been proved by the Supreme Court. What more is a happy news on Feb14?”

Padmanabhan S P, Brand Specialist: “The Mannargudi Mafia -They literally threatened everyone to sell their property. I have been in Mannargudi and we struggled to sell our grand father’s property. Even Gangi Amaran spoke about this. The suicide of Balu jewelers owner, Sivaji Ganesan’s grand-daughter being forced to marry Sasikala’s relative all added to the resume of ‘Mannargudi Mafia’. Many producers were even forced to give their movies at low price Jaya TV.”

Ganesh Krishnaswamy, Student: “Let me give an example. If MSD (Mahindra Singh Dhoni) has a person who helps him in household activities and became a friend of MSD because of this reason, will you consider that person as next Indian captain eliminating Virat? This current scenario in TN is worse than this example since Sasikala was not even considered by Former Chief Minister Jayalalitha madam in her party activities. After the demise of Jayalalitha madam, how can a person who was not even considered in party activities become General secretary and moreover wish for CM position where entire state’s welfare is involved? This is one of the reasons why TN people hate her so much.”

Govind Prasad, Freelance Musician: “I find it quite funny that once a below average person known to Late J.Jayalalithaa has now stirred the politics of Tamil Nadu. She has the audacity to sit in that same chair the Late Chief Minister sat in and order everyone around! It’s not a child’s play… it is the matter of an entire State. What does she think of herself? That the people of TN are fools and will remain silent? How can she become a leader with no political experience or knowledge? Goodbye, Sasikala and we are so glad about you spending your life’s 4 years in jail. God is great and we are celebrating this historic judgement.”

Seems like it that the people of Tamil Nadu are really celebrating the judgement!
