Indian filmmakers are known to be passionate about their films and often allocate a huge budget to make such films on a large scale. Every year, Indian films beat films across the world when it comes to the budget they have used to make such films. This year too, we have our own list of big-budget films that reached audiences worldwide. Some of them also saw massive success and became the highest-grossing films of the year. So, here are the top 8 big-budget South Indian films of 2022.

8. God Father:

Bankrolled by Konidela Production Company and Super Good Films, Godfather, directed by Mohan Raja is a Telugu political action thriller. The movie, which starred Chiranjeevi, Salman Khan, Nayanthara, and Satya Dev in lead roles, had a budget of Rs. 100 Crores. It is the official Telugu remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Lucifer directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. Chiranjeevi reprised the role of Mohan Lal in the remake. The movie succeeded at the box office as it collected Rs. 145 Crores against its Rs. 100 Crore budget. It was later released on Netflix and is now available for streaming.

7. K.G.F. Chapter 2:

Produced by Hombale films, the film is the sequel of K.G.F Chapter 1 which came out in 2018. The movie, directed by Prashanth Neel is a Kannada period action drama starring Yash, Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty and many more. The film also had a budget of Rs. 100 Crores. It saw a whopping success as it became the third highest-grossing Indian film worldwide, the second highest-grossing film in India and the highest-grossing Indian film of 2022. It speculatively received earnings of ₹1,200–1,250 crore globally. To date, the highest-grossing Indian film in India remains Baahubali 2.

6. Vikram:

A Tamil action thriller, Vikram was produced under the banner of Raaj Kamal Films International. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film stars Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi in lead roles and Narain, Gayathrie Shankar, and many others in supporting roles. The movie was the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. The movie had a budget of Rs. 120 Crores and won big at the box office with a collection of Rs. 420 crores. Without a doubt, the movie was one of the most celebrated ones in Kollywood as Kamal Haasan came onscreen after quite some time.

5. Valimai:

Produced by Boney Kapoor in association with Zee Studios, Valimai starring Ajith Kumar, Huma Qureshi and Kartikeya in prominent roles was directed by H Vinoth. The Tamil action thriller had a budget of Rs.150 Crores and had a collection of Rs.200 Crores. This movie was Ajith’s second collaboration with Boney Kapoor after Nerkonda Paarvai. Although the movie opened up to mixed criticisms, it did well at the box office and Ajith fans were happy.

4. Beast:

Bankrolled by Sun Pictures, Beast also had a budget of Rs.150 Crores. Starring Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Selvaraghavan and many others, the Tamil action film was directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The movie was a commercial success at the box office with a collection of Rs. 237 Crores worldwide. However, the film was criticised by almost all critics for its poor writing and unrealistic action sequences.

3. Ponniyin Selvan 1:

Mani Ratnam’s Magnum Opus, Ponniyin Selvan was financially backed by Lyca Productions. The movie had an ensemble cast comprising Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Prabhu and several others. The film was based on Kalki’s novel of the same name. The movie had a budget of Rs. 250 Crores and had double the success as it collected Rs. 500 Crores at the box office. It became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022, the fourth-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time and the 18th-highest-grossing Indian film of all time. The sequel of the film is all set to release in April 2023.

2. Radhe Shyam:

Produced by T Series and UV Creations, Radhe Shyam was made with a budget of Rs. 300 Crores. Starring Prabhas and Pooja Hegde in lead roles, the period drama was directed by Radha Krishna Kumar. Although the film had a whopping budget, it was quite literally a disaster at the box office. There aren’t any reports regarding how much the film collected, but it surely did not make profits at the box office. Critics also received the film with a lot of criticism as the writing and narration could have been so much better.

1. RRR:

As expected, SS Rajamouli’s RRR stands at the top of the list. Backed by DVV Entertainment, the film had a budget of Rs. 550 Crore, becoming the most expensive Indian film so far. The epic action drama starring Ram Charan, Junior NTR, Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, did extremely well in theatres. The film grossed a total of Rs. 1200 crores worldwide and became the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of all time. It has also become the second highest-grossing Telugu film.
