Late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her companion V K Sasikala were convicted on September 27th, 2014 for the disproportionate assets case. They were then acquitted on May 11th, 2015 by the Karnataka Court. After Jayalalithaa passed away, Sasikala took over as the General Secretary of the AIADMK Party and was aiming to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The High Court clarified that she can become a Chief Minister only when she is cleared of all charges from the disproportionate case.
O. Panneerselvam was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu initially. A few days back, he resigned his position and according to reports, Sasikala was all set to swear in as the next chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Post-resignation, Panneerselvam visited the ‘Amma Samadhi’ at the Marina Beach and immediately addressed the press stating that he has been forced to resign by none other than Sasikala and her ‘Mannaargudi Mafia’.
