8 Physical Signs of Anxiety

The pandemic has made most of us realize the importance of Mental Health. While the existence of depression has been found to be more prevalent, people also suffer either minorly or majorly from other mental health challenges. Did you know that an estimated 275 million people  suffer from anxiety disorders worldwide? Anxiety is a normal emotion, a way the brain alerts you of potential dangers ahead. But, anxiety disorders are not normal, and often require treatment. It is indeed difficult to identify whether you actually suffer from an anxiety disorder, or if your anxiety levels are normal. So, here are 8 physical signs of anxiety to identify the same.

It is common to feel like you want to throw up or vomit when you feel extremely anxious. Even drinking water can cause nausea at the time. The sensation to throw up will only stop when you calm yourself and take deeper breathes.

You may find yourself having a headache because of many reasons, including digestive problems, sinus and migraine. However, you can distinguish an anxiety headache from other ones. Anxiety headaches often spread across your forehead. If your headache feels that way and it comes to you often, then you should visit a doctor.

Anxiety’s physical signs come in different ways to different people. For some, it may reflect as Diarrhoea and for other it may be constipation. To know whether these symptoms are because of anxiety, you have to check whether there have been any chances for you to have had a food poisoning or digestive problem. If it is neither, than these bowel problems can also be a sign of anxiety.

Intrusive thoughts are unexpected images or thoughts that seem to pop into your head. These are thoughts that come to you even though you don’t want to really think about them. Intrusive thoughts can be within a range of subjects including violence, diseases, death, blasphemy, etc. Some of these thoughts may also translate into your dreams, and give you nightmares. If you are facing too many of these intrusive thoughts, then it is most likely that you suffer from an anxiety disorder.

Feeling suffocation or breathless is very common when you suffer from severe anxiety. In fact, breathlessness is the very first and most important symptom of an anxiety or panic attack. Dealing with this kind of suffocation is not easy, and it tends to cause heaviness in the chest. If you always find yourself short of breath when there is something to stress about, don’t take it lightly.

Breathlessness can also be felt as feeling dizzy. Dizziness comes to us when there is a lack of oxygen or lack of proper food/nutrition in the body. First, if you ever get extremely dizzy, try to sit or lie down in one place to avoid accidents. Then, take deeper breaths and let in more oxygen into the body, so that you’re more calm before making your next move.

When you worry too much it is common to have a dry mouth or even difficulty swallowing. Your mouth may become tight and heavy and your fear about what’s going to happen makes your jaw tight. Drink some water to improve salivation in your mouth. Breathe with your mouth closed in case you feel that your mouth is too dry.

If you have aching muscles after a good workout, then it is a common after effect. But, in case you have tired and aching muscles without any kind of strenuous physical activity then this may be because your body is restricting the flow of blood to your muscles, therefore causing them to tighten up and tire out. This is not simply a sign of a tiring work week, it can be because of serious anxiety.
