Official UNICEF data says that there are 1.8 billion people across the world who menstruate every month. This includes women, transgender men and non-binary persons from across the world. Those who menstruate every month know the hassle of a period. For some with Uterus related or Hormone related issues like PCOD, not getting a period is also a challenge. On the whole, every menstruating person despises their period week because of its hassles. So, to make your period a tad bit easier, here are 6 tips!

If you use a sanitary napkin, remember to dispose it neatly and to change to fresh ones every 2-5 hours. Do not leave a pad on for more than 5 hours, as it may result in Bacteria build-up. If you use a tampon, change it ones every 4 to 8 hours depending upon your menstrual flow. Leaving a tampon in your body for more than 8 hours can result in toxic shock and can also become fatal. Lastly, if you use a menstrual cup, it is best to empty and re-insert the cup once every 8 hours. If your flow is light, then you may leave it for up to 12 hours, but not more than that.

Your vagina is a self-cleaning organ. You do not require soaps or intimate hygiene washes for your vaginal cleanliness. Also, using your body wash down there is a clear NO! It is important to keep your vaginal area clean during your menstrual period. Use luke warm to clean the area once in a while, especially before changing your period product. Changing your period product regularly itself ensures vaginal hygiene.

If you experience terrible stomach cramps, try to do simple exercises like walking or Yoga to ease the pain. This ensures flexibility even during the menstruating period. However, do not try heavy weight-lifting exercises as it may hurt your back. Keeping yourself fit and walking may also regulate your bleeding flow over time. Some physical exercises will also distract you from the discomfort. Exercise can also lift your mood.

Even though it is natural to crave Junk food, try to avoid extremely oily and unhealthy food items. Instead try eating fruits and vegetable that are rich in nutrients. Due to the loss of blood, the iron levels of the body may reduce and might result in the reduction in overall hemoglobin levels. Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables and dates to ensure your iron intake is perfect. Also, avoid junk foods as spice and oil may cause more period discomfort.

Sugar, Alcohol and Caffeine are known to be causes of Period cramps. Also, when you menstruate your hormones are said to be fluctuating and this has a direct effect on our emotions. It is better to avoid or limit these food items when your menstruating to ensure an easier period. If you have the habit of smoking, you must know that excessive smoking affects your menstrual cycle. It tends to affect your monthly cycle, and this may be why your period is not arriving on time. Try to slowly stop your habit of smoking for a healthier period.

You go through a lot of pain and hormonal changes when you menstruate. Yes, period comes in different ways for different people. But, it has similar effects on the body. It is important to remember not to exert too much when you are chumming. Try to take rest as when you get time. Use hot compress and take hot showers to ease abdominal pain and stomach cramps. Drink herbal tea to make yourself feel better. Take bath, moisturise yourself and wear comfortable clothes to feel good about your body and to make your mood better.
