5 Yesteryear heroines who turned character artistes

Tamil cinema had seen actresses who stole the show playing heroines. And after a break when they began their second innings, they did bag plum roles and continued from where they left, but in strong character roles. Here are a few names from Tamil cinema who prefer doing meaty roles in films that no doubt win them laurels.

Archana


A National award wining actress, Archana was quite popular playing lead in off-beat cinema, especially that of Balu Mahendra. Her acting prowess was so versatile that she was called Smita Patil of South India. She is back after a long gap to do a prominent role that of Vijay Sethupathi’s wife in Seethakathi. In the movie, Vijay Sethupathi plays 80-year-old theatre artiste Ayya. Archana’s subtle performance in the film has won her rave reviews. And now she has a couple of films and she plays the lead in the both. A strong and a powerful character which sets the story going.


Eswari Rao


A dusky beauty, she started her journey with Kavithai Paadum Alaigal in 1990. Came Raman Abdullah after seven years and she was celebrated as heroine who can emote well. She acted Guru Paarvai and in Appu in which she played Prashanth’s Sister. She was back to play a powerful role that of Selvi in Kaala. Interestingly she played Rajinikanth’s wife in the movie.


Revathi


A popular actress who shared the screen space with almost all top heroes in 80s, she chose to do character roles. And call it a surprise, she wooed fans with a matured performance in Paa Pandi. She played yesteryear lover of Rajkiran in the Dhanush directorial. A dignified portrayal in the movie ensured she walk away with laurels from all quarters. She is there in the run with handful of movies with strong characters.


Saranya


She is the most adorable mom of Tamil cinema. Welcomed by masses for playing mother to almost top heroes, she started her journey as heroine opposite Kamal Haasan. Introduced by Mani Ratnam, she has come a long way in her career. Her performance as Veerayi, a widowed mother torn between love and possessiveness, in the 2010 film Thenmerku Paruvakaatru – her 100th release – earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress. She has also played the role of villain in Achamindri.


Urvashi

Call it a comedy role, Urvashi is right there to give her best. One of the popular heroines of the 1980s, she is today a sought-after character and comedy artiste. She has won two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. From Mundashani Mudichu till now, she has had a successful journey and rightly adapting her to changing times. From being a heroine to character roles, she is there to excel. Much recently, her comical performance as hero’s mother in films have won her greater fame among today’s youngsters.
