5 Indian Women Making A Mark Through Their Web Series!!

Producing movies is a challenge and there are only a handful of women who have established themselves in it. A few of them have even ventured to produce and direct web series, that is turning out to become a big hit among youngsters. Here we present to you the list of women who have successfully taken to web series and won the plaudits of masses.

Ekta Kapoor

Daughter of actor Jeetendra, Ekta Kapoor started her career at 17. She ventured into Bollywood movie production in 2001 and has produced numerous soap opera, television series, and movies. She also launched 40 web TV series online through her digital app ALTBalaji. The following is the list of web series created/developed/produced by Ekta Kapoor under her banner ALT Digital Media Entertainment for her video on demand platform ALT Balaji. Maya Thirrai, Romil & Jugal, Bewafaa Sii Wafaa, Boygiri, Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, Dev DD, The Test Case, Class of 2017, CyberSquad, Pammi Aunty, Ragini MMS: Returns, Bose: Dead/Alive, PM Selfiewallie among others. She is currently busy with a web series Apaharan. It stars Arunoday Singh, Nidhi Singh and Mahie Gill.


JS Nandhini

Filmmaker JS Nandhini who made her debut on big screen with Thiru Thiru Thuru Thuru starring Ajmal has successfully ventured to web series with a rom-com titled Nila Nila Odi Vaa. Ashwin Kakumanu of Manktha fame and Sunaina play the lead. The hero, a tattoo artist, finds out that his college crush Nila has turned into a vampire. The supporting cast included Srikrishna Dayal, Ashwath, Gabriella, Meesha Ghoshal, Anupama Kumar, Abhishek Vinod, Praveen, Shira and Harish. Nila Nila Odi Vaa was streamed on Viu.com. It won the admiration of all.


Yasmeen Parveen

Debutante Yasmeen Parveen, who was the chief associate of Mohan Raja’s Velaikaran, ventured to web series with Door no 403. Pooja Devariya who acted in Kuttrame Thandanai, Iraivi, and Aandavan Kattalai played the female lead. It had 13 episodes and the series is produced by VIU. Music is composed by A R Rahman’s nephew A H Kaashif.


Deepa Mehta

Award-winning filmmaker Deepa Mehta is directing the web series Leila, starring Huma Qureshi, for Netflix. It will start telecasting in 2019. Deepa Mehta, who is known for critically acclaimed trilogy Fire, Earth and Water, will also serve as the creative executive producer for the show. The series will be directed by Shanker Raman and Pawan Kumar. Deepa co-founded Hamilton-Mehta Productions, with her husband and producer David Hamilton in 1996. In May 2012, Mehta received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement, Canada’s highest honor in the performing arts.


Pushpa Kandaswamy

Daughter of legendary filmmaker K Balachander, Pushpa Kandaswamy has bankrolled several of her dad’s films besides that of Rajinikanth and Kamal. Now she has turned her eyes towards web series. In association with Amazon Prime, she launched their maiden web series, Harmony with AR Rahman at Prasad Lab preview theatre. A 200-minute series, it was divided into five episodes. The 51-year-old Oscar winning composer played the host in it. Sruti Harihara Subramanian was the director of the show.

“We have produced content for the big screen, small screen and now, we have entered the world of digital media. From a new logo, and jingle music that suits the sensibilities of the millennial to delving into producing content in other languages, this is our way of showing that Kavithalayaa is keeping up with the changing times,” said Pushpa Kandaswamy.
