10 Trends That Ruled 2018!

Runways, weddings, premieres, reality shows, parties and street – fashion is everywhere. 2018 has given us major style goals. Unlike the previous years, this one has been all about functional, comfortable and simple clothing. Silhouettes that flattered every body type, colours that complemented every skin and styles that stood the test of time, this year has been about it all. By Varsha Abhay

From Deepika Padukone’s wedding trousseau to Priyanka Chopra’s bachelorette, we saw celebrities upping the style quotient to an all new level. Whether it’s festive wear or casual, red carpet or airport, trends were spotted everywhere. Here is a list of this year’s top 10 trends that we at JFW loved:

Shimmer:

We Indians have a fondness for things that glitter, whether it is jewellery, shoes or our clothes. And this year, a lot of shimmer was spotted on Indian festive wear but also party wear. A simple way to carry shimmer is by pairing it with something subdued. It’s a must to keep accessories to a minimum and let the glitter do all the talking. A bright lip colour works wonders with this trend, hence a Ruby Woo or a Hollywood Red are your best bets.

High Waist Jeans:

Jeans are a staple in every wardrobe. The best part about this trend is that it comes in all styles. If you are a skinny jeans lover, then pick a high waist one. If you are fond of the boot cut style, then get your high waist in them. It works with every body type. A high waist will give an illusion of a longer, leaner frame. Bearing this in mind, you can team it up with crop tops or jackets as it goes with about everything.

Benarasi:

Considering that weddings and festivals grabbed the most eyeballs in terms of fashion, if there’s one thing that stood out was Benarasi in the form of sarees, lehengas and salwars. The richness of colour, the extravagant jacquard or the versatility of the cloth, we love it all. Greens, blues, reds, purple and of course black, these colours were a major fix this year.

Black:

We know it’s a classic, but this year head-to-toe blacks were popular. Leaving behind monochromes, all-black ensembles were all the rage. Black suits everyone, goes with all kinds of jewellery and can be worn from work to parties. It’s a go-to fashion fixer which is easy to put together an even easier to carry.

Shades of yellow:

Moving from one colour to the other, yellow was a fever this year. Lemon yellows, pastel yellows, sunflower yellow or mustard, it was the colour of the year. Unlike black, yellow is a tricky colour. Picking the right shade for you is important which depends on your skin complexion. Yellow has a wide spectrum and so does the Indian skin colour, hence try and test what suits you best.

Dropped shoulders:

We have seen off shoulders, cold shoulders and one shoulder, now it’s the dropped shoulder trend. The sleeves droop slightly from the shoulders giving you a broad neck frame which is perfect for some statement jewellery. It gives you a longer neck which is great in case you have some killer jewellery planned for the occasion.

Sexy Backs:

While this trend should never go out of fashion, sexy backs were seen in plenty this year. Not just in blouses but in dresses, tops and even kurtis – we spotted women sporting a sexy back at many important occasions. To make it look great, a lot depends on the tailoring of the garment; it should be stitched or fitted to your body to get that perfect back. To keep it safe, opt for a neckline that is not too low in front so as to balance out the length of your back.

Dramatic sleeves:

Short and puffed or long and flared, sleeves needed a drama of their own this year. Bell sleeves, asymmetric sleeves, net sleeves, brocade sleeves…the list is endless. Anything but the ordinary was the norm. A little extra length, a colour here and there or a print that’s catchy, sleeves had a trend of their own going.

Pantsuits:

A tricky trend, pantsuits were seen sported by a few celebrities. It needs to fit perfectly, too loose or too tight could lead to you looking like a disaster. Colour, cut, structure, material, accessories – a lot goes into getting this style to perfection.

Dhoti:

Loose, comfortable and practical- the USP of this trend hit right with the masses. It complements tops, t-shirts and kurtis alike. It works with all body And they are too much fun to wear. Dhotis brought out the Indie this year. Prints, solids, long or short, this trend saw a lot of variety.
