VIP, directed by Velraj, had Dhanush playing the role of an unemployed civil engineer who rises above the odds. The film was a commercial success, prompting the makers to make a sequel. VIP 2 was directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth and was subjected to a mixed response by audience and critics. Despite the film not faring as well as the first, the makers had in the past confirm that there will be a 3rd film too.
Currently, Dhanush has a number of films in the pipeline including his first ever Hollywood venture. The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, directed by Ken Scott, features the Tamil actor playing the role of Ajatashatru Lavash Patel. The film is based on the book – The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe – by Romain Puertolas. The film had its premiere at the recent Cannes Film Festival and is set for a release in India by May 30.
His other films are Vada Chennai with Vetrimaaran, Maari 2 with Balaji Mohan, and Enai Noki Paayum Thota with Gautham Menon. As a producer, he has Kaala in the pipeline. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film stars Rajinikanth, Samuthirakani, Nana Patekar, Huma Qureshi, Eswari Rao, and many others.
