After 11 deaths went unreported at the Asha Kiran home, Delhi, for the mentally challenged; Delhi Commission of Women went on a surprise inspection. The team was shocked to find that the living conditions were  inhuman and disheartening. DCW Chairman Swati Maliwal told TOI,”Shockingly, nude women were roaming around in the corridors even as there are CCTV cameras installed there which are being monitored by male staff.”

A report in Mail Today stated that child patients weren’t provided mattresses to sleep in and the patients needing wheelchairs were crawling to the bathrooms. The shocking details revealed that the patients were attending to nature’s calls in the corridors, which weren’t cleaned.

Bad hygiene and inhuman living conditions have shocked the DCW inspection team who will now take up the matter to the relevant authorities.

Founded in 2001 to provide welfare to the mentally  challenged patients, Asha Kiran witnessed over 500 deaths till date. Details of further investigation have not been revealed as yet!
