The only time India had managed to enter the semi-finals was back in 1974 in Mandelieu, France where they eventually finished fourth.
India’s face-off with Ireland, another team that were considered underdogs, was a nail-biting one with only a single goal by Reena Khokhar from India. Ireland’s defence proved to be hard to beat, with even penalty shots for India proving futile.
However, wishes still poured in for the Indian hockey team.
