Easy Hair Care Methods

Try these DIY hair remedies for healthy hair, both inside and out

Rapunzel did not have to do much to take care of her gorgeous locks. Modern day Rapunzel cannot afford to do that and in a bid to keep the locks shining and beautiful, she ends up damaging it beyond repair. Try these DIY hair remedies for healthy hair, both inside and out.

Pollution, dust and grime, frantic last minute hair treatments at the parlor and even food are some of the main causes of hair fall, hair thinning, dandruff and countless other problems that are faced by women and men alike. There is no need for expensive hair treatments if you just follow some of these really easy DIY tips at home. Eggs, yogurt and honey are, at first glance, all components of a tasty breakfast—but they also happen to be hair treatment ingredients, and affordable, all-natural ones at that. And they're not the only ones. So, the next time, your locks need a lift, save money by using these home fixes.

EGGS

Use the entire egg to condition hair and egg whites to treat oily hair and egg yolks to moisturize dry, brittle hair.

  1. Use 1/2 cup of whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair.
  2. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with cool water and shampoo hair.
  3. Whole egg and yolks-only treatments can be applied once a month and whites-only treatment can be applied every two weeks.

SOUR CREAM & YOGURT

Lactic acid present in sour cream and yogurt helps in returning moisture and shine that is lost because of pollution.

  1. Massage 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt into damp hair and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  2. Rinse with warm water, followed by cool water, then shampoo hair as you normally would.
  3. This treatment can be applied every other week.

LEMON JUICE & OLIVE OIL

Poor diet, stress and climate changes can make hair and scalp extremely dry and itchy.

  1. Mix 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice, 2 tbsp olive oil and 2 tbsp water and apply this mixture on your hair. Let this sit for 20 minutes.
  2. Rinse and shampoo your hair. The acidity in lemon juice helps rid your scalp of any loose, dry flakes of skin, while the olive oil moisturizes the skin on your head rendering it baby soft.
  3. This treatment can be done applied every other week.

BEER

Here’s some news – Beer is not just good for a buzz but also gives volume to your hair! This unlikely beauty beverage contains generous supplies of yeast, which works to plump tired tresses. But remember to use it only after keeping the beer out for a couple hours to get rid of the carbonation.

  1. Mix 1/2 cup flat beer with 1 tsp light oil and a raw egg.
  2. Apply to clean, damp hair, let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
  3. Treatments can be applied every other week.

HONEY

Honey attracts a lot of moisture and locks it in so there is no escaping. This nature’s sweetener will help replenish all the dead protein bonds and give your hair a healthier texture.

  1. Mix 1/2 cup honey with 1 tsp olive oil and apply onto clean, damp hair and let sit for 20 minutes.
  2. Rinse with warm water.
  3. Treatment can be applied once a month.

CORNSTARCH

Cornstarch is an inexpensive way to remove oil and grease from your hair.

  1.  Pour 1 tbsp cornstarch into an empty salt or pepper shaker and sprinkle onto dry hair and scalp until you’ve used it all.
  2.  After 10 minutes, use a paddle hairbrush to completely brush it out.
  3. Treatment can be applied every other day.

AVOCADO

Avocado oils are light and moist like our own skin secretions and they are the best for smoothing or weighing down unruly hair.

  1. Mash up half an avocado and massage into clean, damp hair.
  2. Let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with water.
  3. If you want more moisture, then combine mashed avocado with 2 tablespoons of a hydrating ingredient like sour cream, egg yolks or mayonnaise.
  4. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.

BAKING SODA

Pollution harms your hair on a daily basis. Baking soda has sodium bicarbonate that breaks down anything acidic.

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with small amounts of water until a thick paste forms.
  2. Massage into damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with water and then shampoo hair.
  4. Treatment can be applied every two weeks.
